Coaching for Teens on How to Beat College Homesick Blues

When you leave home and join college, it can be a great experience but may also get stressful. You can be a senior at the high school getting ready to go to college or maybe you are in college trying to find information on how to adjust to this change in your life.

When you leave home and join college, it can be a great experience but may also get stressful.  You can be a senior at the high school getting ready to go to college or maybe you are in college trying to find information on how to adjust to this change in your life. Some advice mentioned below by a veteran teen life coach will be able to help you.

College life is a new world and you have to leave all that is familiar, behind you like your friends, community, family, school and pets.  It can be an hour or six hours away from home but you feel lonely, depressed and awkward. No one says this aloud, but they all feel it. 

There are times when you want to call home and let your parents know that you have made a big mistake and want to come back home immediately. But when you look at the students of the higher classes they look fine and even have made friends. You want to know what is happening and why you are feeling so homesick. Teen life coach can also help you.

You must understand that what you are feeling is absolutely normal and most of the freshmen feel the same way. Here is a list of what you can do to feel good. They are not a recipe and each point depends on the next. They are choices which you have to take for this transition and eliminating home sickness.

  • Discuss your feeling with your roommates, as they may also be feeling the same. 
  • Keep in contact with your old friends and family, but not at the cost of activities in college life.
  • You can email your friend in another college, telling your feelings and compare notes.
  • Do things you like such as reading, exercise, walk, art etc and don’t sit and brood in your room. 
  • Have a meal in the cafeteria with someone as no one likes eating alone.
  • Don’t eat much especially junk food, sleep well, and keep an eye on the amount of drugs and alcohol you consume as they are depressants. The will make things worse and not better. 
  • Have some patience and don’t get depresses as this is a new stage of your life.
