Five Things I Wish I Knew Before I Graduated From College

Five Things I Wish I Knew Before I Graduated From College

A list of five tips for students beginning college or university based on my personal experience.

I graduated from  University with a Bachelor’s Degree in the year 2003.  I had a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and two minors: one in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and one in Communications.  I attempted to enter Graduate School in that same university but was turned down.  So, instead, I did what I really wanted to do, go to Taiwan and teach English.  I was able to do that with just a Bachelor’s Degree and my little background in TESOL helped me with that as well.  But after I returned from Taiwan I started to feel my career options were somewhat limited without further education of some sort.

With this in mind, I have decided to talk about 5 things I wish I would’ve known before I left college.

# 1 In choosing a major, choose something that you love or are passionate about.  Nothing can motivate you more and drive you towards a goal than passion and love for a subject or career path.  You will be better able to succeed if you follow your heart.

# 2  Also, choose a major that has a practical side or make sure you gain certification of some kind with your major.  Passion is great but practicality needs to be considered if you don’t want to become “a starving artist”.

# 3 Gain experience in your chosen field.  This can be done with internships or part-time and summer work.  Choose work related in some way to your field of study as much as possible.

# 4 Get chummy with your professors, especially your Advisor.  One thing I regret was my inhibitions in interacting with my professors and my Advisor.  But, as most people know, these people are essential to future success.  Get to know them as much as you can.

# 5 Get involved in your college or university and have fun!  Some of the happiest years of my life were the ones I spent at college and University – living in the dormitories, making new friends, being involved in clubs and organizations and serving others.  This will bring you joy and experience.

With these five things in mind, I believe you can have a more successful and happy educational experience.  I would also advise you to study hard and do your best in all your endeavors.  Don’t settle for mediocrity if you can do better.
