How to Pull an All-Nighter
Pulling an all-nighter is no mean feat, especially for people who are not used to going a whole night without a wink of sleep.
First off, I am not encouraging people to go all night without sleep. It’s not good for your body, especially if you pull all-nighters on a regular basis. Don’t pull all-nighters just “for the sake of pulling one”. You should only stay awake all night and avoid sleep if there is a reason for it. If you have work or study to do, by all means do it. If you are the kind of person who can’t wake up early, but need to catch an early flight, then staying up might be the best option. If you’re just staying up so you can tell all your friends how cool you are, then it’s really not worth it. On to my tips.
Distraction is Key
Speaking from experience, you have to be distracted at all times during an all-nighter. If you’re working or studying, your work or study time will be your distraction. If you’re staying up for another reason, watch a movie or play some video games. Maybe write some articles if that is what you are into. Just make sure that you’re not thinking about sleep or thinking about the struggle that staying awake will inevitably become. As long as you’re not thinking about sleeping, you’ll feel considerably less tired.

Nap Smart
If you find that you can’t possibly stay awake, make sure you only nap for very short periods of time. The perfect length of time for a nap is 20 minutes. “Power naps” can help you to get rid of your tiredness without wasting any time. Whatever you do though, don’t just lie down thinking you can get back up easily. “Resting your eyes” is a recipe for disaster. Make sure you set an alarm, and that you force yourself to get up when it goes off. If you nap for any longer than 20 minutes, you risk falling into a deep sleep which will leave you groggy and feeling more tired when you awake.

Keep Company
Pulling an all-nighter is far, far easier if you have company pulling one with you too. If you’re studying, you can pull one with some school friends and work on your assignments together. This will be more enjoyable and more relaxing. It will also keep you focussed on your work, because you will all be worried about the upcoming test or project deadline. If you’re flying early, why not hang out with one of your friends for the night if they will also be flying with you? Pulling an all-nighter alone is far, far more difficult than pulling one with company. If you have people around you, you are far less likely to dose off or feel tempted to move to bed or the couch.

Hopefully you have found this guide helpful. Remember though, if you’re working or studying, don’t procrastinate. You need to focus on the task at hand as much as possible. So why not finish up with this guide now and get down to work? If you do have time though, why not Stumble, Reddit or Digg this article?
