Tips for Having a Great Time at University
My tips for having a great time at Uni.
Things I learnt about Uni
I’m now on my third University, so I suppose I have learnt a few things from going to them. There are a few lessons I have learnt, in regard having and good time and doing well that I guess might be of some use to someone. I also dropped out of one Uni, got a first in another, and did a masters in another. So I guess I know about the whole scale! So here are the tips:
Have fun:
Honestly it seems silly, but they best thing that you’ll get out of your degree is a good time. Chances are you won’t remember what you were told about post-structuralism is second year politics class. But you will remember what a great time you’ve had at the Prince of Wales that Friday night with Tom, James and the lovely Sara.
Pick a degree you’ll enjoy
Just because you’re daddy thinks you should be a layer doesn’t mean you should do a law degree. Pause for thought. If you find your law degree crushingly, mind squeezingly dull, chances are you’ll find being a lawyer dull too. That’s 40 years of slow, plodding boredom, then a heart. Think it through careful, if you hate your degree swap. If you want to study art, study art.
Keep up a minimum standard
Are you working a forty-hour week on your degree? Going to all the lectures, and doing all the reading? WASTE OF YOUR LIFE. Honestly, in first year make sure you attend about 50% of the lectures, and make sure you hand in essays on time, and go to everything compulsory if they complain about it. But don’t bust a gut, save that for when it counts. Do the minimum you can get away with. See point one for why.
Never let a lecture get in the way of a good night out
Truth be told, lecturers really aren’t very important. Chances are that your lecturer is some crazy old man, who spends too long reading books and gets helped out by old women in supermarkets because they can long longer deal with the real world. Its also quite possible that they are reading from a passage in a book that takes them an hour, which would take you five minutes. So, if you have a fun night out planed, don’t worry too much if you can’t attend.
Maintain basic levels of personal hygiene
I should level with you and say that I didn’t always follow this rule. There was a ten-week period whereas I didn’t wash. I was living the hippy lifestyle smoking pot and sitting in a field, and it was fun for me, but no so much for other people. You’d be amazed how many more friends and girls you’ll find if you wash at least weekly.
Don’t go home too often
You miss your mum, you miss your dad, and maybe you miss your gran and miss you cat. But honestly, you can’t go home too often. Once a month is a lot, once a week is crazy. You have your own life now; if you’re away every weekend at home then you’ll be missing out.
Get a Job
Getting a job will make you friends, keep you independent from your mum and dad, and look great on your Cv. Because to be honest if all your CV says is, went to uni then you’ll look like a bit of a weirdo. Think about it, if you were going to employ someone would you rather that they had work experience, or not?
Right, that’s its. Basically I suggest that you have as much possible whilst making sure you get passed your first year or two, and end up with a 2:1 at least. Because to be honest a 2:2 is a waste of time. If your American that this whole 2:1 2:2 thing is meaningless, so just skip it. As a parting comment, remember lesson one, it’s the most important.
