What is the Right Major for Me?
Steps that can help you choose a major.
When someone enters college for the first time they usually think ‘crap I have to think of a major right away’, but most of the time this isn’t true. Usually in the beginning there is the undecided category you can choose. Even by choosing that you might be stressed during those first few years. Here are a few tips I have figured out.
Your first semester take some classes from majors you are interested in. It might even end up being a class you need to take. For example, if psychology always seemed interesting to you take the introduction course of it. Many majors actually require that so you will be killing two birds with one stone.
Another way to get valuable information about majors is by asking around. Ask family members and friends who have degrees about their majors. Do research online on jobs that seem interesting to you. Look at job listings and see what they require for jobs you are interested in. Choosing your major is something you need to put a lot of thought into or you might regret it one day.
Finally something that can really help is career tests. I’m not talking about the ones you took in junior high that said you should be a boat captain even though you get sea sick. I’m talking about sophisticated ones that might take you an hour to do. Most colleges offer these tests free of charge. They can tell you what are strong areas for you and popular jobs for people with those strengths.
Some people know what they want to do from childhood, but not everyone is that lucky. I know I wasn’t. I personally went through a lot of stress and used all these steps. I just hope they help you like they helped me.
