What to Do During Senior Year of College
Important Guideline for the senior year of college.
This year is an important year for college seniors, and having recently completed my own, I want to give some helpful suggestions for the class of 2010.
- Take care of the ‘What are you going to do next year?’ question EARLY. Hopefully you gave it some thought already junior year. Start working on the job/grad school/service program search RIGHT AWAY as in September. Trust me, this is imperative. Come November or December you’ll be in final season and too busy trying to graduate as opposed to worrying about what to do graduation. I wish I had recognized this, but I chose the fall to take advantage of being newly 21 and neglect my career early. Hence, here I sit, pretty much unemployed and not starting school in the fall.
- Start asking adults in your life or anyone who knows anyone who has connections to whatever field you’re doing.
- Get in good with the career center right away, as they will book up. Refresh your resume, learn cover letter writing tips, and definitely ask for interview coaching.
- ATTEND CAREER FAIRS! Companies come to the school specifically to hire people from those school. You are much more likely to get a job or internship based on a face-to-face meeting.
- Do not take your stress and anxiety out on your friends. If you already into grad school/got a job do not brag. This will most likely be the most stressful time in your life.
- Do not do a senior thesis unless you’re thinking about grad school. You will slack off, be unmotivated, and write it at the last minute.
- Dispense your wisdom to underclassmen, as I am doing now. They will only benefit.
