Are You Bored? Two

Some personal thoughts about the activities of bored students while in classroom. A sequel to the “Are you bored” article.

Finally, you’ve actually made it on time for your class. Happy with yourself you sit in your place, take out your notes and begin to listen to what the teacher says.

After a few minutes you realise that this is not the teacher’s lucky day since it’s incredibly boring what they try to teach you. What have you left to do then? You try to take down some more notes? Or maybe you just listen hoping something interesting or humorous to be told? No! Here you have listed what I see people do when such thing occurs:

  1. Laser Eyes

Now that happens quite often. Have you ever seen people looking like puppets staring at the teacher as if they wanted to burn a hole in his forehead? I believe it’s an advanced form of sleeping that includes eyes open as a disguise saying “Yes, I am listening!”. I don’t recommend it since one’s eyes ache after 30 minutes of such form of relaxing.

  2. Doodling

Another common form of disconnecting. Has one perfectly developed and tested form of trying to look interested in the class – you look as if you were vigurously taking notes. What’s more – some people draw really nice! This can be both advantage and disadvantage though. I had a chance of pretending to learn from my friend’s notes. I ended up reading all the comic strips drawn all over the margins. I read everything. Everything except the, undoubtfully interesting, content of the notes about the subject.

  3. Camouflaged Reading

Recently less and less popular. Some time ago people were more used to reading books hidden in the notes. This made you look as if you were reading your notes carefully. Nowadays this form of spending your “free time”, while in class, started to fade away.

  4. Written Conversation

You need a companion for that. Find a topic you both are interested in and begin to write what you would’ve said if talking wasn’t prohibited in class. It has one big disadvantage. If the teacher finds out what you’ve been doing and approaches to see what you’ve been so actively “talking” about you’d better haven’t been talking about your teacher’s funny appearance, clothing, gestures or yellow teeth.

  5. Spying

Actually quite an interesting form of spending one’s free time. All you need is someone doodling, talking or reading under cover that sits next to you. Then you can observe the actions taken by your neighbour. Especially entertaining when the previously mentioned neighbour is doodling, and doodling nicely. Actually, I think I’m being watched curiously by people behind me while I’m writting this article.

To Sum Up: There are many activities to do while being bored in the classroom. Some more, some less interesting and entertaining. Without a doubt we can be assured that new ones are being actively developed and tested on teachers as you’re reading this. If you know any other interesting activity please add your comment below so that I could try it myself.
