Fun Things to Do Outside with Kids
Summer weather is once again upon us and so are the family reunions, picnics and BBQ’s. Here are some idea’s to keep those kids entertained on a budget while enjoying the great outdoors.
- Shaving Cream cleanup- let them “clean” a deck chair or table using shaving cream to wash it. This is a messy one, but is easily cleaned up afterwards with a hose and will make whatever they wash sparkle! The little ones LOVE this!
- Egg walk- Plastic spoons and eggs are all you need for this one. Put the whole egg on the spoon and have them walk from one spot to another without dropping the egg. If they drop it and it doesnt break, they have to stop and put it back on thier spoon before proceeding. The first one to the finish line with a whole, unbroken egg wins.
- Water baloons toss- Fill up some baloons with water and let them play catch. Each time they catch they have to take a step back. This one is fun with more than one set of people playing.
- Sack Races- With 1 person per sack, have them jump from a starting spot to a finish line. You can also do this with 2 people and 1 sack for a 3 legged sack race.
- Sidewalk Chalk- A cheap solution for children who love to display thier artstic side and once they are done, its easily cleaned up with a hose. Most store outlets carry buckets of several different colors. You can also teach them how to play hopscotch by drawing the grid with sidewalk chalk.
- Make Bubbles- You can buy them or make your own at home using 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of light corn syrup and 4 tablespoons of dishwashing soap. Let the kids use everyday items like plastic straws and slotted spoons for blowing thier bubbles.
- Make Musical Instruments- Some kids are happy with just making alot of noise. Find things to make musical instruments out of such as pots, pans and wooden spoons or make your own items by recycling. You can make shakers out of toilet paper or paper towel rolls and filling them with beans or popcorn kernels then sealing up the ends. Empty plastic water bottles also work great for making shakers. The kids can then decorate them with stickers or markers.
- Play Hot Potato- Use a bean bag and pretend that it is a very hot potato. Sing this song while passing it quickly back and forth. “The hot potato, goes round and round, To pass it quickly, you are bound. If you’re the one, to hold it last, The game is past, and you are out!” The last person holding the hot potato when the song is over is out. Continue until one person is left in and wins.
