The Dangers of Having Celebrity Role Models

The Dangers of Having Celebrity Role Models

Wealth has now become the only means through which people choose their role models in a world that is in dire need of the likes of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

Role models are people we admire and try to copy. They are mostly people whose perseverance paid off while in pursuit of their dreams.

Role models are people that have gotten to the apex of their careers due to the great ideas and unique gifts they possess.

We come in contact with such people on a daily basis through available information dissemination bodies like the Internet, television, radio, and the print media.

There are numerous admirable personalities to choose from if one is in search of a role model. We have extremely creative individuals spanning the numerous professions and countries across the globe.

From sports personalities to talk show hosts, actors, directors, comedians, lawyers, politicians, doctors and even preachers, there seem not to be a short supply of celebrities rocking our world with their enviable gifts and lifestyles.

It is quite unfortunate that wealth has suddenly become the only means through which role models are selected. This is a sad development, as a matter of fact it is now the primary reason we are no longer familiar with people whose struggles are capable of transforming an entire generation.

Role models are supposed to be people admired based on the positive principles they are governed by and for their sheer doggedness.

In this century, People are no longer challenged to dream like the Martin Luther King of the United States or the Nelson Mandela of South Africa. They are no longer challenged to change their world; all they now want is an opportunity to be named among the rich and the famous.

Due to its large distribution network, Hollywood has now become a major place where people shop for role models.

There wouldn’t have been anything wrong with people looking for role models in the show business world if not for the unrealistic lifestyles these celebrities live.

Apart from their unrealistic lifestyles, they have become the only people whose scandals are celebrated on a daily basis by the press.

Majority of Hollywood celebrities are only concerned with the business aspect of their career. They are willing to sell to members of the public ideologies that are capable misleading those who look up to them.

Most of these celebrities view life from a microscopic point of view and expect their fans to accept these views.

Our celebrity role models have thrown caution to the wind; they have become strict adherents to the “sex sells” rule.

All we see on television these days are nothing but images that promotes nudity, violence, foul language and gangster life.

There is a hardly a musical video beamed on MTV where half naked girls are not on display.

Pornographic materials have now become accessible on the Internet by a mere click of a computer mouse.

Modern day hip-hop artistes feed our kids daily with lyrics that promotes violence, drugs, rape and even murder. They go as far as bragging about the number of girls they have slept with.

These are the celebrities our kids are copying; they are gifted people who at the same time are morally bankrupt.

Parents are advised to monitor the activities of their wards; they should endeavor to live exemplary lives hereby serving as the first set of genuine role models their kids are exposed to.

They should guide their children in the area of whom to admire or copy, emphasizing that role models should never be chosen on the basis of the financial wealth amassed by the individual involved during his lifetime.

It is the duty of a modern day parent to be aware of the type of information their children are being fed with. If not monitored, such kids will be left to learn about life, love, sex and marriage from the available information medias and also from their peers.

On a final note, aspiring celebrities in the show business world should learn from the mistakes of their predecessors. They should endeavor to be positive in every area of their lives.

They should bear it in mind that it is only those who affect their generation positively that God rewards.

We have people like Martin Luther King, Kennedy, and Mandela. People sit back and look at what they did, but they don’t do nothing. They can’t put the past behind them. So they can’t pick up from where these role models left off to make it a better world. People depend on presidents for that, and they sometimes don’t do nothing either. The best role model you can have is Jesus Christ, and you can do all things through him.

Great article.
