A coloring book is one of the best things you can give your child. Not only is a coloring book cheap, but it’s also an enjoyable educational activity for your child. It will help your children enhance their artistic and motion control skills, comprehension and color recognition.

A coloring book is a good way to keep your children busy. If it’s their first time, help them out in coloring the pictures.  It is best to get the ones that have stories in them. This gives the book the added feature of providing pictures and stories which you can read to them later. A coloring book is also a good pre-cursor to reading.  The large pictures with simple labels on the bottom are a good start. Children can easily identify large recognizable pictures and their labels.

If you are to give a coloring book to a child for the first time, make sure that you start them off with large pictures so coloring within the lines are easier. During these times let them color the pictures according to their own concept or ideas. Then color a picture to show an example how coloring within the lines will make the picture look better. As they get the concept of coloring, you can now introduce pictures with more of the smaller sections to color. This way they can have a sense of achievement that they were able to color something challenging and difficult.

If you sense that your child is getting bored with plain coloring book editions, then you can find a coloring book that has more activities in it. Ones that have dot to dot activities are good variations since this will help them improve their counting abilities. They will begin to recognize numbers and have a better understanding of their sequential order. After completing the picture they can now begin coloring them. Some books even have other activities like coloring by numbers.

To make a coloring book educational, it is always up to the parent to guide their children on how to use it properly.  You can even incorporate reading as you can teach your kids how to read the labels. This is a way to improve the vocabulary and comprehension skills of a child. It comes along with teaching them how to read and follow the instructions.

However, it would be best to keep it in mind that not all children find it interesting to color a book for a long time.  If they tend to have an aversion for coloring book activities just let them explore other things that interest them. It is only a matter of time before they realize that a coloring book is fun. Just do not make reading, or coloring the book a task for them or they will lose total interest in a coloring book.
