Preschoolers: Their Growth, Development and Behavior Patterns
Preschoolers are an age that most parents worry about. Here are a few things for them to look into for their healthy development and training.
It is only natural for parents to wonder occasionally if the development of their preschooler is going well.
In the course of development, a look into the following aspects should help the parents gather some guidelines on how to assess the child in general.
If the child sleeps comfortably and rises the next morning looking fresh and rested then one could say that he has had a restful night. But, on the other hand if a child for over three weeks shows signs of grouchy mornings, restless nights and nightmares then it is essential to look into his routine that needs some reshaping. There are signs that he could be coping with some stress.
Another important aspect that needs attention is an observation of the eating habits. Incase the child occasionally skips a meal or two there is no reason to worry about. Also an occasional liking of something may result in overeating. But, constant fussing over meals most certainly requires attention over the child and the menu.
Bowel and Bladder control (toilet training, in other words) is also an important aspect of a child’s gradual phasing into school. Occasional accidents are fair enough but, the training of both must be underway.
It is also important to observe if the child is emotive and expressive about his views. Joy, anger, sorrow, grief, enthusiasm, excitement, frustration, love, and affection should all be a part of the package and made an observation of during a few weeks
Playing alone is perfectly alright for a child. After all, we all like drowning ourselves in a world of imagination. But, a child who is fearful of peers or who frequently claims superiority over others may be seeking reassurance or may doubt his or her ability to meet parents’ lofty expectations. Let your child enjoy his play time with variations in all that he does everyday.
Healthy socialization is also indicated through yielding to the adult. Children rebel but getting the right view point with firmness, love and clarity is important. This allows them to see respectful authority of an adult with clarity.
A child who never pries or snoops where forbidden may not be pushing against perceived boundaries enough for healthy development or may fear punishment excessively. On the other hand, frequent manifestation of these behaviors may indicate a search for boundaries. Allow your child to be interested in something outside of himself or herself? The emphasis here is on sustained involvement in “activities” rather than in “passivities” such as television. A preschooler who cannot become absorbed in an activity or who stays with a project until completion may need help.
Spontaneous demonstrations of affection vary among families and cultures, which must be taken into account on this criterion. Nevertheless, in culturally appropriate ways, a child who is thriving is likely on occasion to express affection toward caretakers and deep pleasure in being with them
