Back to School – Happy or Sad?

Back to School – Happy or Sad?

What emotions do back to school evoke in you and the kids?

Most of the kids are sad, many of the parents are happy. A few kindergarten kids are happy at the beginning- it marks the beginning of being a big kid. In their minds they are no longer in baby nursery school; they are getting on the bus and going to real school with the big kids in the neighborhood.

For middle school kids usually 5th -8th  grade it’s become a ritual- back to school starts. For 5th graders going to middle school it can be a little scary at the start- leaving their elementary school days behind them and maneuvering a bigger school, more teacher changes and a big gym as well as art and foreign languages.

But for all the kids it means leaving the carefree fun days of summer behind them, they can no longer anticipate the fun family vacation, camp, and a visit to grandma’s house.

For the older ones it means the start of homework again, the testing that goes along with it. The days quickly become shorter and there is less time to play outside.

Back to school marks the passage of time in everyone’s youth and we all remember the feelings.
