Community Service
This is what I got out of community service.
This year is Social Justice I have learned a lot. The community service I did also taught me a lot. For my community service I helped my dad coach his basketball team. I helped him coach on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and some random days throughout the week.
I myself got interested in doing this because I used to play basketball on a team. I was really good and very competitive. Basketball was my main sport before tennis. Playing team sports all my life, I know how important it is to be on a team and support each other. Another reason why I helped coach my dad’s basketball team was because my two little brothers Chris, and Kevin were on it.
I wasn’t the only high school kid who helped coach on this team; Ben Macias helped coach because his little brother was on the team also. Our team was pretty good this year.
My dad’s team was pretty good; we only lost one game in the regular season. In the city tournament we lost in the finals and got second place. Las year when I didn’t coach we won it all, upsetting a club team.
Coaching basketball this year I learned a lot. It is important as a coach to be a good role model and leader. The kids look up to you and being a good role model will influence them to do the same things that you are doing. For example, one time at a practice my little brother dropped an “F” bomb when he missed an easy shot, and all the kids started to laugh. To be a good role model I scolded him, and made all the kids run laps. I made all the kids run because I wanted them to understand that they are a team and if one person does something wrong that they all have to pay for the consequences. After this little incident no one ever used profanity again.
I think that doing anything for the community is very important. I probably could have done for helpful stuff like working at a food bank, or going down to the border and filling water for the Mexicans. Doing community service makes you feel good about yourself; knowing that you did something to help someone in his or her life is a great reward. I will definitely do more community service throughout senior year and college.
