Earth and Venus
About how Earth and Venus are alike and different.
Venus is thought of as Earth’s sister planet. Early in their history, scientists believe that Earth and Venus were alike; both had liquid water, and many of the similar gases that Earth ahs today. Venus has changed drastically since its early history. A major greenhouse effect problem caused the planet’s atmosphere to fill with carbon dioxide and start heating up the planet. The oceans that once filtered the carbon dioxide evaporated and the greenhouse problem increased.
The planets started with the gas from the nebula, which is one of the reasons why the planets were similar in their early history. By studying Venus, we can observe what may happen to Earth if we continue on our global warming trend. We are releasing thousands of tons of carbon into the atmosphere, where it retains the heat that should be escaping. If the problem continues, Earth may end up with a run-away greenhouse effect and become a sister planet with Venus yet again.
One of two incidents that humans are doing to try to reverse the damages we have done to the atmosphere is the Kyoto agreement, which states that nations should reduce their emissions by 7% below their 1990 standings. That is set to expire in five years. According to ScientificAmerica.com, the United States did not ratify the agreement, and therefore the Kyoto agreement has only help to slightly slow global warming.
EarthEssay.com lists several daily activities that someone can do limit their carbon emissions. Driving a fuel-efficient car, eating locally grown foods, and eliminating the use a weed-eater are just a few of the activities.
