How to Give Time-out
Used repeatedly and correctly, the time-out technique can change almost any childhood behavior. Every parent should know how to give time out.
Time-out should be short enough to allow your child to have many chances to return to the situation and learn which behavior is acceptable. A good rule of thumb is 1 minute per year of age ( with a maximum of 5 minutes). getting a portable timer that ticks continuously and rings when the required time is up is very helpful. The timer stops the child from asking when they can get out.
when sending your child to time-out always be persistent of course younger children need to be taken there by there wrist or carried. Tell your child what they did wrong in one sentence (like, ” No Hitting or No Biting”) also let them know the right behavior (like, “Be nice to your sister”) these comment give your child something to think about while in time-out.
Make sure that when you decide where time-out is going to be that it is a boring place where they can not be entertained. Now time out can be a chair, play pen, or their bedroom
Time-out can be used at any place if you are shopping the grocery cart can be time out. If your are in the mall a bench or the bathroom can be used or you can take them back out to the car. If you are outdoors have them face a tree for time-out.
Good Luck!
