Iknow Learning Method

Iknow Learning Method

Sometimes, memorization and learning is a really tough thing to master. When I was a kid, my father made me write everything ten times over. Sure, it worked, but it was awfully tedious. It’s also not something that would work for everyone. So, what will work? Technically, the best ways to learn something are to read it, write it, say it, hear it, and teach it. I’ve found a program to help you with just about all of these. Don’t worry, these flashcards are fun.

Technically, iKnow is a Japanese studying site, but you can use anything in there. I’ve entered flashcards for things I need to remember for my classes in there, and I’m studying SAT questions. It’s a really fascinating program.

Here’s the site: http://www.iknow.co.jp/

First, you select the course that you want to take, and it will direct you to the lesson. You have the option to see either five items, or ten. When you choose that, it will give you the words for that lesson and the definitions to the words. You can uncheck words you don’t want to study.

Once you get past that page, you click the “next” button to move on. It will take you to your first word, read it aloud, and give you the definition. Even if it’s your own created list of words, it will use a program(or maybe prerecorded words?) to speak them for you. That first time you see the word is merely a teaching flash.

The second time around, it will give you the word. You click “next”, and it will give you a series of definitions, one of the choices being “none of the above”. You must click the correct one, or you have to view that section of the lesson again.

The third time around, it does it similarly, only more choices and no “none of the above”. The fourth time, it will give you the definition and you must give the word. Finally, the last time, it will give you the definition and you must type out the word. It’s not a multiple choice card.

I love this program, because it not only lets you study effectively, but it’s also a great review. Words you have already studied will show up in your future lessons. On the first card, if you remember the word, it will send you to the last step. If you have signed up for an account to track your progress, it will record the percent that you studied each word, and the learned amount of each course.

It also had the BrainSpeed selection. This one you must be quick on; it will give you a time limit for each screen. You get a definition and two words, and within a few seconds, you must click the correct one. This is done at rapid repetition with words throughout the entire course. The one thing I disliked was that though I hadn’t studied the word, it still gave it to me.

If you don’t correctly choose the answer, you will, in gamer’s terms, lose a life. You can gain lives through the game, but it’s easier to lose them.

Through the game, you reach higher levels depending on your speed and number of correct words. Each level will make your time limit a little bit shorter. It really keeps you on your toes.

When your game is finished, you will be shown which words you got correct and those which you didn’t. It has a graph of statistics pertaining to your game at the end. Depending on how good you did, your score will be updated on your page when you view that lesson again.

The other feature is the dictation lesson. It will first read a sentence aloud and you must type in the blank word, the one that pertains to your lesson. The second time around on that sentence, it will read it all and you must type in the entire sentence. It’s designed to make sure you can understand what the person is saying clearly, and that you can repeat it back to them.

All of that, plus the community bonus, iKnow is the most amazing flashcard site I’ve ever found. I go there frequently to study.

Note

A great way to make sure that you know these, as stated before, is to say it, here it, read it, write it, and teach it. To cover all of these, say it as you read it. It will let you hear it by saying it out loud for you, and in the last lesson you must write it back to it. Afterward, why not go teach it to someone to show off what you just learned?
