Movie Magic: Program Idea for Recreation

Movie Magic: Program Idea for Recreation

An introduction to how movies are made; which is taught by writing, acting, and filming you very own movie. We will only be using what props and scenery we have on hand so the kids have to use their imaginations to make this work. There is one main rule for the week: use your imagination.

Monday

This day will be used to introduce the kids to movie industry terms, write the script, and cast the roles. Encourage and help the kids with coming up with a story that can be filmed here. Nothing too crazy or out of reach, be creative, and have fun. Make sure everyone gets a voice, try to get everyone involved. The ‘script’ itself doesn’t need to be a traditional script. In other words you don’t need to write down every line of every character. Instead make an outline of what the movie is about. We will go over feeding lines in the ‘filming’ days listed below.

If you have any kids that don’t want to be in front of the camera utilize them behind the scenes. Have them help with props, getting scenes ready, or even let them shoot some small scenes themselves.

Tuesday

These three days will be your filming days. You don’t have to film the movie in order (some days you might be missing actors or actresses). I will edit the sequence of shots in the correct order later.

You can film the scenes two different ways. The first way is feed the lines for the scene right before you shoot the scene so the actors in the shot only have to memorize small portions of dialogue. Or before you start shooting for the day you sit down with the kids in the scenes and write an entire days worth of dialogue. In my experience the first way is easier and quicker.

Don’t be afraid to use all parts of the park. Get as many different ‘location’ shots as possible. Also use your imagination on how to film certain scenes or on how to create ‘special effects’. Use props, build miniatures, turn on and off lights for an explosion, or whatever else enters your head. USE THE KIDS AND YOUR IMAGINATIONS.

Friday

Movie Premiere!

You will need to have someone edit and put the movie on a DVD Thursday night. That way it can be shown on any T.V. connected to a DVD player. Don’t forget the popcorn and drinks!

After the movie the kids tended to have a free play day.
