The Importance of English Class

The Importance of English Class

Taking English in secondary school is important.

The study of English Literature. What’s the point? Do we really need it? In my opinion, yes! I believe the study of English is crucial to everyone’s success. This subject has many useful life values in it. Reading and writing may seem rudimentary to you, but it is quite the contrary. You speak everyday! What else could allow us to communicate with such ease. English class is all we need!

You are reading this essay right now. That is clear proof that the study of English is important. Without it most of this essay would be gibberish to you. English class allows you to understand what all this means. English gives you the ability to read great pieces of literature, and bad ones, to develop your knowledge. It furthers your skills, allowing you to immerse yourself into a world of pirates, the history of Caesar, a fantasy with elves, dwarves and wizards, an epic tale of daring and adventure. You can become a part of anything you desire. All it takes is a little reading, and studying English will get you there.

Writing. The twin brother of reading. Without writing what would there be to read. Without reading what would be the point in writing. Writing may seem primitive to you unless your writing text messages but it is one of the most important inventions ever. Beowulf is considered to be the first piece ever written in English and it marked the birth of English. Writing is an incredibly powerful tool if used properly. A great writer can persuade people, allow you to see the world through a different perspective. A great writer can do anything with the right techniques. Even if you never plan on becoming an author writing masterpieces of English Literature it is still very important to know how to write. Your job will at some point require you to write. Therefore if you want to keep your job you will have to know how to write. To even get a job you need to write a resume and if doesn’t make sense or sound appealing, good luck getting a job.

Speaking isn’t important, Right? Wrong! Just go “ask” anybody if they think speech is important. Oh right, you can’t “ask” if you don’t speak. Studying English allows you to hone your skills speaking. Where would we be today if we didn’t communicate by speech? I can tell you one thing, we wouldn’t be as advanced as we are today. Talking allows one to communicate with ease. English class adds to your speaking ability, making you understand what the English language has gone through, learn new words, understand phrases and much, much more. If you were the smartest person in the world, but couldn’t speak intelligently then peoples impressions would be that you are as dumb as rock. Having the ability to speak well and use proper words when needed can provide you with countless opportunities in your future. One could get a job based almost entirely on there speaking skills.

These three basics, reading, writing, speech, that studying English teaches you, are crucial to ones success in there career, hobbies and everyday life. That is all the proof I need to believe that taking English class is very important is rightfully placed in the current curriculum.

I HATE ENGLISH CLASS!, posted this comment on Apr 25th, 2009

I ABSOLUTELY HATE ENGLISH CLASS! WHAT WE DO IS SO POINTLESS. WE JUST READ SILLY BOOKS THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I CARE ABOUT OR WHAT I AM INTERESTED IN. WE ARE THEN TOLD TO EVALUATE DIFFERENT THINGS ABOUT WHAT WE READ. DO I REALLY CARE ABOUT WHAT SOMEONE DECIDED TO WRITE ABOUT IN ORDER TO RIP PEOPLE OFF AND MAKE MONEY? NO, I DON’T. ABOUT THAT WHOLE LIFE LESSON THING, I’D RATHER WATCH A MOVIE. IT’S THE WRITING AND SPEAKING THAT I DON’T MIND DOING, IT’S THE READING OF POINTLESS NOVELS THAT HAVE NO MEANING TO ME OR ANYONE ELSE THAT I HAVE TALKED TO THAT BOTHERS ME. I DON’T CARE THAT SOMEONE DECIDED TO PUT WORDS ON PAPER IN THE FORM OF A STORY THAT I HAVE TO READ AND WILL NEVER COME OF ANY USE TO ME. I DON’T CARE, AND THE READING OF NOVELS IS POINTLESS!
