The Written Word

Sometimes ideas in how to educate are not always a good idea.

Education goes through many stages over the years, new ideas are brought to the board for consideration, the early 1970’s saw massive changes in the education system in the UK, girls were high achievers and new lessons were being taught, modern times, boys were learning needlecraft, girls were learning metal work. The 1980’s saw changes during the Margaret Thatcher era, the Comprehensive system was introduced, no more High School and Secondary system, all were considered equal in education. At a recent reunion, it was remembered by staff and pupils of a trial system up for consideration, the following will explain what happened and the end result. There is a lesson for writers in there somewhere too.

Eye disided tu rite as thoze in thu 70’s in thu UK werr thinkin of teechin thu chilledren how tu rite.

Thay werr goin tu get them tu rite az they wood say it.

This waz an interrestin theery and wood have mayed comikal reedin. This passaige aloan wood hav bean ritten in several diferent wais as we awl wood say thu werd thu saym but thu leterin wood probablee be compleetlee diferent. We kan awl reed wat is on thu payper as ower brayns are cleva and can chayng wat we see so we can undastand it.

Just eemagin if it had been alowd to go ahed, the teechas wood hav been pullin thair hair out, gow with me on this, lowds of werds all spelt rong and diferent, wood thu werds hav been rong? How wood wun no? Wair du u draw thu lyne? If a swair werd apeerd on thu payper but reeds within thu context of the pasaige how kan u korrekt it?

Thu idea must hav sownded okay at thu tym but then thu praktikalitees and realization kiked in.

Thu theery sownded ok and it did proov wun thing, disiplin in riting is needed in awda to produse gud werk. Ther wood be no need for spel chekin on thu computa as it wood probablee hav a nervus brakedown tryin to korekt evrything as myne is now!

So radikal and forwerd thinkin obvyowsly needs tu be kontrold in sum way. Thu ryta needs disiplin within ther ritin werk, grama, spelin and presentachun.

Thu leson for thu ryta, be disaplynd, doant rush werk, rite cleerlee, it is okay to go with forwerd thinkin within yaw artikle it will git yuw notisd, run with thu nuw and rememba neva, neva forget tu spelchek, beecos sumwun inventid it for yuw tu yuse and if yuw doant yuse it evrywun wil git yuwsd tu reedin it rong and spelcheka won’t be needed any mor and thay wil be owt of a job, yaw werk wil be hard werk for thu reeda and thay will git boord, that brings me tu thu end of tha leson from thu 70’s. Did yuw injoy it?

Nb: Meye upologees tu thu Triond teem hew had tu reed this befaw they mayd a disichun.

The funny thing is that spell check only found a few mistakes, copy and paste it and test your spell checkers spelling.

Whats really bad Glynis is I see teenagers writing like this a lot! Even (gasp) my own! I blame texting!

It’s amazing that you can read it with everything misspelled. My spell check did catch the words but turned the sentences into something nobody can read.

That was an interesting article. My son to this days makes some of the same errors. I even see some of my friends that text me do this. Do be honest it gave me a headache to read it.

That was very uncomfortable to read, but you made a good point.

I collected a passage with terrible spelling to do an article on spelling which I will publish later. It demonstrates that we can read through entire paragraphs with words misspelt.

I believe though, that in order to be able to do so, we have to know the correct form in the first place.

An enjoyable article. The teenagers I work with, spell exactly like this.

Glynis this is a problem all over the world. The schools need to go back to the basics, because what they are not producing readers or even students who can write properly.
In my case I have one thing to say, “Thank goodness for spell-check”

One infant school actually took up the new method of reading as you say it, I was on career deciding project that year and saw the books, I think they may have been destroyed fairly quickly.
Yes I apologise to the non English speaking readers, it may take a bit of getting used to!

My thoroughly modern catholic comprehensive threw out this idea out of hand. Still doesn’t stop me from writing rubbish sometimes though!

How sad is that.. but sometimes I feel myself (spelin) like that. It does seem easy though, doesn’t it? just to make up your own ways of vocabulary..
