Why are Schools Important?

Nowadays, schools play an important role in the world.

A decade ago, schools existed but were of no importance as only rich people could afford to send their children there because schools were not free.  A few decades ago, these institutions were not even known.  However, these few schools progressed and have now secured a vital and permanent place in society.  Schools have been classified into three types, taking into consideration the children’s age – pre-primary school for children between 3-5 years old, primary school for a period of 6 years and lastly the secondary school or college up to the age of twenty.

In the educational field, schools are a basic need.  The pre-primary school prepares children for the work they will have to do in primary schools.  There they will do some arithmetic, reading and writing as well as improving their creative imagination because teachers put emphasis on visual aids mainly.  The primary school is concerned mostly on the expansion of our academic potentials in Mathematics, EVS and the languages like English, French till the pupils reach a higher level.  The secondary schools, on the other hand, provide a variety of subjects – on the science side: Chemistry, Biology and Physics; on the economic part: Economics, Accounts.

Schools also possess another important role in hand; the social role kindergarten gives children the experience of life outside their parents and relatives, making the change from home to school not too sudden for them.  They meet children of their own age group and start making friends.  In primary schools, the children continue to learn, make friends belonging to different cultures and obey their teachers and respect them.  The school therefore provides its pupils with opportunities of long-lasting relationships with a much wider group of people other than their family group.

The importance of school is based on socialisation as well.  At this particular basic institution, other values and skills are taught apart from the ordinary values learned within the family like respect, good manners, cleanliness, honesty….  Schools inculcate rigid punctuality and compulsory uniform which will be an advantage to any student if he was to apply for a job.  In other words, the school is disciplining the children who in future will become then respectable, law-abiding citizens.

Schools are also indispensable because they even offer some sports activities.  Those who cannot afford to join a club for the sake of sports, schools are a free alternative.  They provide physical education teachers knowing the skills and techniques of a variety of games including football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, hockey, skating amongst many other possibilities.  These team games offered at schools, apart from lessons, develop and foster spirit cooperation and competition.  Quizzes and debates are also organised at colleges and the other institutions, thus improving and developing students’ academic potentials and the quality to express oneself in public.

All these small but essential things which determine an individual’s career depend upon schools that offer social, academic and even athletic chances and activities.  The social relationships will push us further to become someone or nobody in life.  Academic position helps to achieve good certificates and degrees and acquire both job and status.  Finally, athletic activities to stay fit and in good health.
