Back to School Worries Teenagers Face

But not everyone said schoolwork was their biggest worry. Just as many people said, they worry most about social issues such as: Fitting in, having friends, being judged, or being teased.

Out of 600 students, One third said they worry most about schoolwork. But according to a recent survey on Teens Health, not everyone said that schoolwork was their biggest worry. Among the issues that worry teens are: Fitting in, having friends, being judged, or being teased. Another category ranked high on the worry list for teenagers is appearance. One fourth of the people that responded to the survey said that appearance worried them the most. This is why I agree with schools requiring students to wear uniforms.

Kimberly, 14, told us, “I’m happy about going back to school — I’m bored stiff here! But I’m worried about reputation, teasing, failing, and being a nerd.” Another teenager said that lots of students are hard on themselves, and worrying can add to the pressure. Other students find that playing sports or keeping themselves busy helps to take their mind off things. Making friends is also on the top list of worries for teens. A sixteen year old said that she has a strategy for coping with rude or mean people: She just ignores them and it drives them crazy when you act like you don’t care about what they have to say. Another teenage girl said that her way of dealing with rumors and gossip is to hold her head high, smile and create a new reputation for herself. >Another issue that teens have to face is body issue. Dealing with body changes is a big worry for many people. How we look and feel is closely related to our self-esteem and being accepted by others.

As a teenager I’ve never struggled fitting in but you are right in saying that school work seems to be the least of school going teens’ worries. I think with all of the cliques that go around, it’s no suprise every teenager’s priority remains fitting in!
