Braces, Retainers: Hell in Your Mouth
Are you about to embark on the wondrous adventure of braces, retainers or any sort of metal in your mouth? We’ll you’ve come to the right place I am here to infor you of the absolute horrors! Braces are horrible they hurt, emotionally and physically. Oh the name calling. Oh the sensitivity in your mouth. These are horrendous works of art these braces are. Read forward to find out the pain you are going to endure. Or if you have them already. Are already enduring.
Have you had braces? Have you had a retainer? Have you gone to the orthodontist month after month being told the same old story.
“yup they’ll be off next month.” Don’t trick yourself. You know as well as I do that it’ll be longer. Something will pop up and it’ll be atleast 6 months before they come off. If you haven’t had braces or are going to get them, this article is going to put you straight off them.
First of all, braces only hurt for awhile after they are tightened, but that’s not where the main pain is felt. The pain of them is every time you breath, chew or speak your jaw starts to ache. Sometimes when I use to touch my teeth together I’d be shocked and think that something had exploded in my mouth. The whole sensitivity of braces has to be the worst part. It’s not one jolt of pain. It’s many over about a week. Seriously soggy bread will hurt your teeth. Another pain of braces is the pain of smiling. Not for you but for everyone else. Braces aren’t pretty, they don’t make you look good, they make you look like a transit express. When you have braces you should expect the usual. Train tracks, brace face, metal mouth and a whole lot of other assorted maybe even unheard of insults will come your way. If you get the little colourful bands on your braces it won’t matter for too long. After a while they have to take them off to make way for industrial wires that are wrapped around every bracket. fun fun fun.
Lets move onto the orthodontist. These people all have a special language and it’s pretty much generic. We will come back to the pains of braces soon don’t worry. Ok now for the language. When they say.
“We’re just going to snuggle, move, nudge this wire into here.” They really mean.
“Hold still this is going to freaking hurt.” In fact whenever an othrodontist braces you for the next event to come just hold on for dear life because something is going to hurt. Now just a quick little bit of advice for the person watching the person in the chair. The funniest site of braces will be seeing the person feet bobble and flail all over the place as they are being worked on by an orthodontist. I’ve been in the chair I can tell it would look funny. Orthodontists are great at instilling false hope, don’t believe anything they say. Untill you hear the words.
“These braces are coming off today.” don’t be fooled by anything else they say. I was told I would have them off by christmas in about october. I didn’t get them off till April the year after. Hey you’ll be glad to know after your braces are off you’ll get plates and wires glued on to places you never knew existed.
Now for a pain story. This had to be when I most hated braces and was in the most pain. Brace yourself, pun intended. Ok about a month before I got them off they informed me I needed a fibrotomy. I get there on the day off the fibrotomy and they give me all these pills. I’m getting scared by now, if there giving you pills it’s gotta hurt. So now I’m in they chair and they’re rubbing numby creams on my gummys. Then comes the sore part. They bring over an array of injections further numbing up my whole mouth. Injection after injection. In front, behind, to the side. They put them everywhere. Now for the most horrendous blood curdling part of it all. I should know my blood was curdling I saw a lot of it. They cut all my gums front and back, front and back about 3 times in two places on each gum (top and bottom) and on the front and back. So thats? 24 cuts? And this was all in the venture to keep the fibres in my gums from doing something or rather I wasn’t listening. The sound of the cutting of the gums sounded like rubber ripping. I could hardly feel it but the sound was bad enough, there was a slight tingle that you knew would be immense pain if you could feel it. After I got out of there the anaestetic wore off. Thats when the pain really kicked in. It burnt, it bled, it gave me a light head. It was horrible! I made the mistake of brushing my teeth that night. Not a good idea. It covered the sink in a crimson layer of blood. I freaked out!
Anyways to finish this beautiful article I’ll have to leave you with this. For however amount of years you have your brace on. No girl or boy will want to kiss you, you will endure copious amounts of pain whether it be physical or emotional. The time you spend picking food out of your braces would make you rich if you got paid for it. Whoever’s paying for your braces is paying a lot. Smiling sucks but at the very end of the pain, suffering and torture your smile will be so awesome you wouldn’t imagine how good you will feel.
I guess I’m glad in the end. Thanks Mum and Dad
