First Interview Questions

First Interview Questions

First job interviews can be nerve-racking, but this list of questions that they usually ask should help.

I recently went for my first job interview. It was at my local KFC restaurant. Prior to going to the interview I was Googling for the questions they would ask me, but I didn’t really find a dedicated website or article, they were mostly forum posts. So now I’ve compiled a list of all the questions the manager at KFC asked me and the answers I gave him. Please note that not all the answers are necessarily the best ones, but the thing is I got the job.

The interview was surprisingly easy, probably because I’m only 15 and the manager wanted to be nice since he knew I’d be nervous. How nice of him :) Most of the questions were obvious, I just picked the ‘good’ answer (e.g. When he asked me if KFC should be clean with friendly staff or dirty with nasty staff, you can guess what my answer was).

I never got the dreaded “tell me about yourself” question.

I hope this helps anyone who is going for their first job interview as a 14 or 15 year old.

The Basics

How old are you?

I turned 15 2 weeks ago.

Are your parents aware that you are applying for this job?

Yes.

Why do you want to work at KFC?

I like KFC, and my grandma recommended it.

How often do you eat KFC?

Every week or so.

Do you always come to the KFC location?

Sometimes we eat at this restaurant, but most other times we got to KFC elsewhere.

Have you worked anywhere before?

No, this is my first job.

Do you know anyone that works here?

No.

What position are you applying for?

Customer Service.

Do you believe you are fit for this position?

Yes.

Is there anything stopping you from performing any tasks that the job would involve? (e.g. soap allergy)

Nope.

Do you play any sports, or do you have any other commitments?

No, I used to swim but I got sick of it after 5 years, then I did kickboxing with my friends for like 2 weeks but I didn’t like it so now for exercise I just ride my bike everywhere.

When are you available?

Every day.

Could you work late nights, school holidays and public holidays?

Yes.

Are you able to get transport to and from the restaurant, even on late nights?

Yes, my dad takes the car to work, so I can ride or get a lift with my mum on late nights.

Could you come in and work on short notice? E.g. if we rang you at 4:00pm would you be able to come in and work at 4:30pm?

Yeah sure.

I am not going to lie to you. This job is not easy and it could get dirty. Do you understand that?

Yes.

When it comes to training, can you adapt to new things quickly?

Yes, I’m a fast learner.

When do you want to work?

Whenever you need me.

Scenarios

What would you expect from KFC, from a customers point of view? Would they expect a dirty restaurant with nasty staff, or a clean restaurant with friendly, smiling staff?

Uh… a clean restaurant with friendly staff and good food.

If a customer was unhappy, for example, they said their chips were cold, how would you deal with it?

I would hear them out, and probably get them some new, hot chips.

So you would just try to make them happy?

Yes I suppose.

My Questions

It was now my turn to ask questions about the job. I only came up with one.

What does the job involve?

The Customer Service position involves working at the cash register, serving customers. It also involves wiping down the tables and unpacking food when we haven’t got many customers.
