How to Survive Going to The Same High School Your Parent Works in:

It’s happening to me, and I’ve found a few things to keep in mind that will keep everything running smoothly in school with your parent.

To start off, every kid eventually needs to go to high school, and everyone has parents who need jobs. So when your parents job is a teacher, administrator, etc., at the high school you’re going to be attending, things might get a little difficult. My mother works at the same high school I go to, and at times I wish she wasn’t in my school.

So first off, one thing to remember is to get everything straight BEFORE school starts. Tell her what you don’t want her to do, like not to tell embarrassing stories about you to the class, or not to call you by any nicknames during school. Just tell her how you will act, and how you think she should be. Once you’re in agreement, you can relax, at least for the time before school starts.

Next, make sure you don’t get in a lot of trouble in school. I know it’s fun to throw things in the cafeteria, or curse out your teacher, and nobody’s perfect, but please, try to be good at least during school.

Another important thing to remember is to not make a big deal about your mom/dad being a teacher. If someone asks, simply tell them, “Yes, he/she is my teacher, but I don’t mind.” If you leave it at that, people won’t think of it as a big deal anymore, and things will stay normal. Also, tell your mom/dad to not make it a big deal that you’re her/his son too. As long as everyone knows, then it won’t be a problem with them, and you’ll get less annoying questions like “Is mrs.Koebele really your mom?”

Tell your friends that she’s your mom, so they don’t come into class screaming, “Hey guess what, Justin got in trouble today, he got sent down to the principal!!!” Trust me, friends will do this as a joke, but your parent may not think it’s so funny, and you could find yourself grounded quick.

Just be yourself. It’s the best you can be, and don’t worry too much about your parent being in the school. If you just let things be, everything will be fine. If there’s a problem, don’t sweat it and find out how to fix it.

And finally, just have fun. You’re not going to be young forever, so enjoy the time you have in high school. High school is about learning from your mistakes, and finding your place int he world. If something happens with your parent in school, just remember there’s always someone who has it worse. Sometimes life can get tough, but with a little hard work, you’ll barely even notice your parent is in there.

So good luck, and hopefully everything will work out fine.
