Oceanside High School Embarrasses Westview

The Pirates overwhelm the Wolverines, bringing home a victory for homecoming.

It wasn’t too long before the Oceanside High School home crowd could accurately predict the outcome of the Pirates’ homecoming game on Friday.

In response to defensive lineman Thomas Molesi’s request to “set the tone,” the Oceanside High Pirates allowed only two Westview High School first downs in the first half of play, one of them coming off of an Oceanside penalty on the first possession of the game, the other resulting in a punt shortly after. Westview boasted no rhythm the entire game against an aggressive, lock-down Oceanside defense.

Oceanside (6-0) went on to defeat the Westview Wolverines (3-3) with a score of 49-3. The Pirate’s offense faced little resistance from the Wolverine defense, ending 7 of its first 8 drives of the game with touchdowns. Senior quarterback Quentis Clark threw for three touchdowns, while the other four Pirate touchdowns came on the ground, as Jake Fely scored Oceanside’s first two touchdowns of the game, both with the ball inside the five yard line. Eventually, Clark found himself in the end zone as well on a quarterback draw. The key player on offense, however was wideout Jerry Whittaker, who caught all three of Clark’s touchdown throws, and also ran for another score, shortly after catching a short pass and running deep into Wolverine territory.

The Wolverines also faced offensive woes, with three and outs on all but two possessions of the first half, both resulting in punts. The Oceanside defensive line forced the pocket to collapse all night, pressuring the Westview quarterback constantly. Westview, who relied on their running game heavily, gained little success on the ground and was shutout, with the ball carrier rarely moving past the line of scrimmage.

The Westview Wolverines will host the San Marcos Knights next week, a team who Oceanside had embarrassed two weeks ago. The Pirates, now fresh off a win for its homecoming crowd, will travel to Mt. Carmel High School to play the SunDevils (2-5) next week.
