Prom King and Queen

Prom King and Queen

How Prom King and Queen are chosen at Beech High School.

With prom just around the corner, many Beech upperclassmen are preparing for the big night. Dresses and tuxes, nails and hair, dinner and limo reservations occupy the minds of students. But one things slips their mind: Who is this years Prom Queen and King?

In the fall and spring, students from across the school nominate who they think best represent their class. With these nominations, a list is made of the most common names. With the ballot, students vote on the court and either Homecoming Queen or Coming Home King.

However things are little different with Prom Queen and King. Many students do not know how Prom Queen and King are picked. “I think we vote. Don’t we?” asked Senior Cena Bolton.

Instead of a school wide votet, only Seniors vote for Prom Queen and King. Seniors registering for Senior walk may nominate any senior girl for Queen and a boy for King. Nominations from do not have to be a couple going together. During Senior Walk, a moment where Seniors parade down a catwalk and parents take pictures, adult chaperones tally the nominations. The girl and the boy with the most nominations are crowned Prom King and Queen when the walk ends. Afterwards, pictures are taken and the two share a dance together.

Last year was the first time for this method. Before last year, Seniors voted in the cafeteria the week of prom. Lack of attention and votes, because of Senior Picnic, forced the voting to move to prom night.

Beech has never had a tie, and Mrs. Joines says “we will cross that bridge when we get there.”
