Seven Tips for Good Health Whilst Studying
It is easy to forget to look after ourselves whilst we are studying. These simple to follow tips will not only help you look after your health but should also aid the studying process.
- It’s easy to start day-dreaming or become distracted whilst we are studying, so by trying to find your own concentration span and body rhythm you can cut down on lost time. Whilst studying keep a note of the time and how long you were able to concentrate for. It should soon become clear if you study best first thing in the morning, mid-day or in the evening and how long you can study for. In this way you will be working with the rhythm of your body.
- Keep a glass of water next to you as you study and sip on a regular basis. A well hydrated body means a well hydrated brain and a well hydrated brain works better.
- It has been known for years that certain foods are good for increasing the capability of our brains. Without going into all the science you can help yourself by eating certain foods that are known to increase your brains power and these include: fresh fruits including bananas and avocados, cereals and grains (trying to avoid the high sugar processed breakfast cereals), vegetables and legumes (soybeans, kidney beans, chick peas and lentils are all good), dairy products such as yogurts. Also try not to eat a huge meal just before you sit down to study as this often brings on the feeling for the need to sleep.
- Now did you know that nicotine causes constriction of the capillary vessels in the brain which then restricts the blood flow to and around the brain? This in turn reduces the delivery of glucose and oxygen. This reduces the ability of the brain to learn and to think. So before and whilst studying try to cut down on your smoking.
- If you are working on a computer screen then choose a font that is easy on the eyes. Fonts that are known as sans-serif are ideal and these include such fonts as Arial and Tahoma. Also set your font size so it is large perhaps 12 or even 14. This will save you having to squint at the screen and struggling to read what you have typed. On many computers the F9 key is also very helpful because in some packages such a Word Publisher a quick press of the F9 key will enlarge the font in an instant. Or go to zoom and then zoom, so you can enlarge the font further.
- “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!” So plan your time to include not just your study buy also time to do those ’must-do’ jobs and social time for spending with family and friends. Getting the balance right is difficult but once you have you’ll find not only your studies benefit but also you family and social life.
- If you are lucky enough to have a study area then make sure the desk and chair are at the right heights for you. Try to situate the VDU screen so that the sun does not fall on it or at least have a curtain you can pull so you can put it in the shade. In the summer if you find you’re getting too hot invest in a small fan and in the winter try to keep the temperature warm enough to keep yourself from freezing but not too warm that you wan to fall asleep.
Hopefully armed with these tips your study time will become more enjoyable and beneficial to your learning.
