Young Men Vs. Hair Length at Private School
A view of long hair for guys in private schools.
Why is it that young men at private schools cannot have long hair?
Viable reasons are things like rebellious behavior, religious beliefs, and cultural diversity. However, strict rules on meaningless things like hair length has to make one wonder about the decision making in authority, and possibly even angry. In this day and age, culture has accepted diversity and change. In reality, these strict dress codes not only prohibit one from expressing one’s self outwardly, but they infringe on personal freedoms, decrease self confidence and demote leadership abilities and change.
America is a democracy, run by the people and for the people. Yet, in this supposedly free country, there are places where personal freedoms do not exist. Surely, this is not the same as a third-world, or even communist country, but freedom is supressed. In private schools, the administration is saying, “You must look a certain way, act a certain way, talk a certain way.” The last time I remember reading about such restrictions on a set group of people was in Nazi Germany. This may not be as severe as racism, but it must be a form of sexist ideals. Ideals where, once again, have no place in a country where everyone is created equal. When I look back and see the sacrifice my forefathers had to make in order for me to attain this state of free, it breaks my heart to know that freedom is not given to all.
This is the year 2009. Throughout history and throughout the world, we have seen astounding artists. Figures like Van Gogh, Picasso, Chagall, Warthol, and many many others, appear into our minds. Not only are young men victims, but art as a whole is also targeted. In private schools such as mine, they valued training in leadership. But how is one supposed to learn to lead when they are stuck in a box? Change did not come to this world through a microscope, but rather, a telescope. Basically, if everyone is thinking the same way, then how is anything supposed to change? In these tough economic times, the world needs people who will step up and take charge, not people who cowar and hide behind poor foundations. Art will not last if people cannot express themselves.
And also, having long hair today does not mean one is rebellious. It merely means it is how they choose to have their hair look. Clearly, there are some obnoxious hairstyles, but that is what helps make that person unique. And if shorter hair is what they desire, they should allow longer hair for men because those who are trying to be rebellious will no longer see it as such.
(I would have loved to elaborate more on my ideas, and I may do that later, as well as organized my thoughts better, but I am running short on time. Thanks for reading and I hope I swayed a few readers in their decision, or at least made them reconsider.)
