How to Double Clutch

How to Double Clutch

A technique that saves wear on clutch and gearbox.

Sometimes called a double declutch, or double shuffling, double clutching is an alternative method of changing gears in a car equiped with a manual transmission. Usually in car’s it’s only practical and beneficial to do on downshifts.

Benefits

  • Decreased wear on clutch and transmission, meaning less maintenance costs
  • Awesome noise when done correctly
  • First step towards learning Heel-and-Toe shifting.

The process

While a normal gear shift consists of pushing in the clutch, changing gear, and letting the clutch out somewhat slowly, double clutching is slightly more complicated.

  1. Push in the clutch
  2. Change into neutral
  3. Let out the clutch
  4. Blip the throttle (requires some practice to get the right rev. range)
  5. Push in the clutch
  6. Change into lower gear
  7. Let out the clutch

This may seem like a lot more work than a normal downshift, and that’s because it is, but with practice a double-clutch downshift can be as fast, if not faster than a normal downshift.

The idea is to match the engine revs to that of the lower gear before changing into it. When you blip the throttle you are aiming to get the revs high enough so that when you downshift and let the clutch out, the revs will be matched for that gear at that speed.

Remember, practice makes perfect with this technique, good luck!
