How to Shift Gears in a Car

If your new to driving you will need to learn how to drive a manual transmission. Most people drive automatics but for a hot sports car it’s more fun shifting gears. You have more control over the vehicle, better gas milage and a higher performance engine. There’s nothing like down shifting around a sharp turn at high speed. Down shifting also saves brake pads from wearing out. If your battery is dead you can always pop the clutch to get your car running again. Manual transmissions last longer, as well.

First you have a clutch, the third pedal to the left. Then you have the stick shift in the middle of the car. In order to start the car, you must first engage the clutch, this is the neutral position. With the clutch down start the car by turning the key, make sure the stick shift is in neutal as well , that is the middle position of the scamatics of the shift pattern. You can move the stick from left to right, with the clutch down at the same time, this ensures you that you are in neutral. Make sure because after you start the car you will pop the clutch, meaning release the clutch back up, if the stick is in neutral the car will remain running if not the car will jerk and stall. Now you must also have your foot on the brake otherwise you will roll backwards when in neutral. There is no P park position on the stick shift so you must use an emergency brake to park, that is a stick that you pull before and after you drive the car, on when parked; off when driving.

Lets find first gear, with the stick shift. Its all the way to the left and up, put the clutch down with the left foot holding it down and use your right foot on the brake pedal, use your right hand to put the stick shift in the first gear position, up and to the left. Now slowly realse the clutch and I mean slowly (only for the first gear) as you do that give it a little gas, you will feel the car slowly pull forward as you are releasing the clutch, foot off the brake and a small amount of gas. The first gear is the hardest gear to get use to, so be patient if you stall a few times, you will get the hang of it! Now that you started out slow releasing the clutch and its fully disengaged you can drive untill you reach an average of about 2500 RPMs. Thats the gauge to the left of the speedomator. But don’t go by that go by sound, you will hear the roar of the engine reach its peak and start winding out, get familiar with this sound you will need to recognize this sound inorder to know when to shift the other gears.

The first gear is rather quick before shifting to the secound gear, let off the gas, put the clutch in, all the way down with left foot, move the stick shift to the 2 position witch is down and all the way to the left, now pop the clutch and give it gas after the clutch is out and go! Now when you hear the winding out of the engine shift to the third gear with the clutch down, foot off gas, and place the stick shift all the way up and in the middle, between first gear and reverse. Make sure you dont go into reverse by accident, this will destroy your transmission! Now from third you can drive in the 20 – 35 mph range without a problem, school districts or side streets for example. When you want to go 40 mph and 50 shift to the forth gear. Use the same sequence as the other gears and pull the stick shift straight down, past neutral position; all the way down. Pop the clutch and go! When on the highway use the fifth gear located right, next to the 4th gear, down and all the way to the right. So put the sick into neutral first with the clutch down to release the stick free, push it forward, the stick shift up into neutral then to the right and now down, pop the clutch and your in 5 at high speed. To down shift do everything in reverse, remember to pop the clutch or you will burn it out. Have fun and be safe, thanks. When you park, put the stick shift in neutral and pull the emergency brake, always use the clutch to move the stick shift.
