Camaros, Mustangs, Barracudas and Trans Ams were second generation of muscle cars. But unlike their predecessors, such as the Pontiac GTO, Oldsmobile 442 and Plymouth Roadrunners, these pony cars has as much power, were lighter, had relatively bigger tires and lower center of gravity.

Underneath they were pretty basic with drum brakes, solid rear axles and push rod engines. But that was also one of their advantages to those with fire in their eyes and decent job. Protraction, real dual exhausts, bigger engines and a plethora of aftermarket products let those guys pump up the performance to their hearts content, and they could even do the work themselves if they chose to. They could make their Camaro SS truly fast.

The new Camaro is the 21 century car. Much as the old guys would like to sit around and wish for the good old days, the new Camaro would just plain eat lunch of any those classics without the drama and with bunches of safety features.

This Camaro SS has a unibody construction, compared to the classic body-on-frame. it has traction control and GM StabiliTrak electronic stability control performance and safety features. The same is true with this Camaro SS brakes and they are 4-wheel disks, with Brembo 4-piston calipers.

On first generation Camaro that this model seeks to reminds us of, you could get power steering, but not rack-and-pinion, like what you get on the new Camaro SS. Only cars like Porsche and Ferrari has rack-and-pinion steering then.

Choosing the 6-speed manual transmission Chevrolet throws in Performance Launch Control, making acceleration launches quicker and more consistent and saving significant amounts of tire rubber in the process. Cars do not go faster with there wheels spinning, they just look cooler. The Camaro SS comes with 19 inch, 20 or 21 inch wheels. The Camaro SS comes standard with a Tremec TR 6060 6 speed manual standard but if cannot drive stick then it comes Hydra-Matic 6L80 6-speed automatic. The automatic transmission has serious first gear launching. There are tall overdrive ratios to increase gas mileage.

Even the latest Camaro did not have standard independent rear suspension, It is 4.5 link suspension with a L-shaped upper control arm that attaches to the knuckle at one end and incorporates a ride a bushing int he rear. The front suspension has a dual-ball strut system, with a hollow stabilizer bar that measures 23 X 4.2mm.

The rear suspension ups lateral stiffness using three lateral ball joints per side. A subframe at the rear is double-isolated to minimize vehicle body motions and dampen road imperfections. Coil-over shock absorbers are used in the rear with a decouple, hollow stabilizer bar measuring 23 X 3mm. What this means is the Camaro SS will go where ever you point it almost all the time.

The Camaro SS is fun to drive, even if there are not people around to see it. People who drive this car will be seeking out those lonely mano-and-machine moments.

My friend had a Camaro back in the early 80’s and we’d cruise around in it in the days when you didn’t worry about Chevy going bust.
