The Sky’s The Limit
Magazine style car article.
There’s no lairy paint, the 17inch rims look pretty normal and the arches don’t look like they’ve been injected with steroids. And that’s what I love about this car. Everyone knows that bodyline, the r33 skyline, gtst chosen for drifting of course.
Don’t get me wrong I love a show slag but there’s something so refreshing in these hard times that you can have an amazingly quick if slightly understated machine. And then we meet the owner . . . . There’s nothing understated about Korby. This guy climbs pylons for a living, fucking fruitcake so next time your electric cuts out at stupid o clock and it’s pissing down with rain spare a minute of thought for him seconds away from frying himself for the love of a good car. The way Korb see’s it is that he bought a skyline for the legend it is and why mess with something that already looks so good, you wouldn’t ask Kelly brook to get a boob job would you? See my point?
So why are we featuring a standard car in the daddy of modded car mags? Well we’re not, this beast is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and this wolf is pushing a whopping 412bhp. When you start looking at the details you start to realise how much has actually been done and the reasons why, and the fact that he has done most of it himself is just the icing on this pylon shaped cake.
So obviously the engine is the most modified section of the car but surprisingly still running standard internals, everything has been done trying to avoid a full engine out job, until needs must and if (fingers crossed it doesn’t) something goes wrong. For now just some of the horses are down to this rb25det lump and the added extras. The biggest difference started when Korb fitted the r34 gtr intercooler and hard pipe kit, not even shying away from cutting the hole in the chassis, told you he ‘s a nutter, the 3inch exhaust running the full length finished of with a blitz nurspec back box helps this monster breathe easily and the hks mushroom filter and blitz supersound dump valve add to the effect. The bigger mods come as a RSP stage 3 turbo with stronger steel internals compared to the standard ceramic and deautchworks550 injectors working in union with of course a wolborough 255lph fuel pump and z32 air flow metre all topped of with a cherry of a custom map by the tuning gods that are Rising Sun Performance.
With so much power from a standard block you’d expect problems, and there were some while on the dyno the first day (yes there was a few runs) the coil packs broke down, no fucking about, he delved into his wallet and fitted new uprated coil packs along with heat range 8 ngk iridium plugs. Ok so sorted? Nope of blow the boost pipes, fucking great, new clamps fitted, lets try again. So back on the dyno and. . . . it’s misfiring under load, and it’s the end of a long day, shit really does happen to good people!
So one more return to workshop and the guys sorted the fuelling problem and finally happy days, now that’s persistence.
Helping the launch control is an exedy organic fast road clutch, again fitted by the man himself along with braided brake lines all round and some mintex 1144 racing pads and some decent ap racing 5.1 fluid and he can stop as fast as he can go.
The body of the car is subtle; Window tints have been added for privacy in the rear along with a genuine gtr spoiler because he prefers the look of it. He’s also removed front and rear bumpers to de- dent and respray them the same colour (did I mention he’s a pert time body sprayer- talented guy hey) and rebuilt the nearside rear spat, as it was imported in broken.
Inside the car follows the same design as outside with recaros from a supra in the front, custom seat rails had to be made up so they fit. When you sit in them and buckle yourself into the 3-point harnesses you really feel like part of a play station game and the awesome sound of the engine warbling and bubbling away with the odd pop of a flame through gear changes does justice to everything this car stands for. It stands for believing in every single thing you do, not getting carried away with meaningless features, bright flashing lights or rinsing your credit card to the max. It stands for working hard to get what you want and doing it yourself whenever you can.
The DVD player is a perfect example. It was fitted it because he likes to meet up with everyone and when the car talk runs out he wants to watch a film or play the ps2 but there’s no massive install, partly for weight saving and partly because he doesn’t want the music too loud, probably so he can listen to the engine, that’s what I’d be doing too.
The bottom line is that this car is all about Korby, and the car loves him for it, the attention it gets is obvious, it’s a real head turner without being over dramatic and that’s not something that’s easy to achieve.
This is going to be one to watch, once you’ve got the bug you’ve got it bad and I don’t think for a second this story is over so keep your eyes peeled and I can garauntee you when Korby decides this power is no longer enough it will be upped, and it will be done exactly how he wants it, this car should be the role model of the year, set your goals and achieve them, it can be done!!!
