Tips to Save on Gas Mileage
Tips to save on gas mileage.
In todays economy we could all use tips on how to save gas. Some of these things you may know and others you may not. Pick and choose if you have to, but if your able do all of them.
- Take it easy. When your at a light or stop sign there is no need to blast away like speed racer. If you do you put more strain on the engine and waste more gas. Be sure to take it easy out on the highway as well. There is no need to pass every person whose going 2 miles below your speed. Go easy on the accelerator and you will save some of that expensive gas.
- Sudden stops are not good for your gas at all. Now sometimes in order to protect the car you have too, but when your coming up to a stop sign or red light just coast or gently use the brakes.
- While on the highway be sure to use your cruise control. The smoother your ride the less gas the engine will have to use and the more you’ll save.
- Watch your speed! You may want to be there as fast as possible but that is killing your gas. 55mph is the idle spot to be for your cruise control. Driving at 70 or 75 will drop your fuel efficiency 10-15%. So next time your going over the speed limit remember if you slow down you will save money.
- Dodging the rush. We all hate rush hour and so do our cars. All the stop and go that we have to deal with just burns through your gas. Try to find a way to get there before it or wait until its done.
- If your already out and about might as well get your shopping done as well. Restarting a cold engine simply because you were to lazy to get all your things done in one trip will cost you in the long run. Hit all the stops in one sitting to save your time and money.
- This one is pretty simple and most of us know about it, travel light. You don’t need those coolers in there any more so take them out. The less weight your car has the easier it will ride and the less gas it will burn. Also avoid putting things on the roof when possible this adds to the car’s air drag and can drop the car’s mileage quite a bit.
- Avoid the air conditioner. This is something most people hate to do. Its hot and your car has been sitting in the sun all day. It sucks I know but roll down the windows and enjoy the breeze instead. This is one of the worst things for the cars fuel and should be avoided when possible. That being said when your on the highway going above 55mph it is better to use the air conditioner and have all the windows rolled up.
- Do not idle. When your not doing anything your cars gas mileage drops to 0. your car doesn’t have to warm up to get going so don’t let it idle. The bigger the engine the more gas an idle car will burn through.
- Last but not least don’t put your left foot on the brake. Even the smallest tap will cause you to drag a bit and use more of your gas up.
Doing these things when possible will save you gas. You may not notice it much right away but over the months it will add up and you will save money for some better things.
