Turning Hand Signal
My old chopper is still on the road. I still have a real old Chevy pickup work truck. That’s why one of my good friends warned me about using hand signals. He said most of the young drivers might just think I’m waving at them, I have to really watch out every time hand signals are used as I try to turn off any heavily traveled road. I could get rear ended and have my chopper sent to some mechanical grave yard. I’m just trying to tell you all what hand signals mean and how old chopper riders use them.
In the state of New Mexico you don’t have to have any turn signals on every vehicle. That way you aren’t breaking any law when a light bulb goes out. One of the first things young truck drivers learn is how to walk around their rig and check all the tail lights, turn signals and head lights before they take off. It usually doesn’t take them very long to learn about using their left hand as a turn signal when one of the lights on the trailer gives out.
That process is very convenient to understand while driving your car or pickup. It can keep you from being tail ended by any other driver who understands what you mean. It has really helped all the folk in New Mexico who couldn’t afford any new pickup. They need all they can understand because them old trucks can have just about any minor part stop working.
As strange as it might seam hand signals work for just about every vehicle on the road. It really helps all the old fashioned chopper builders. They usually wouldn’t put any tail lights on the bike the built. The biker just had to know about hand signals to keep the folk behind him from smashing into his rear end.
It tends to work best when the driver of Harley rider use their left arm to signal with. You just stretch it all the way out to the left if that is the way you are turning. To make a right hand turn you just have to lift your left hand straight up while your left arm is still strung out. There is just one trick that can be used to make sure no one thinks you are waving at them. I always make sure the palm of my hand is facing to the rear because normally it is facing forward while you wave at someone.
There is just one other thing that must be practiced while hand signalling. You got to keep watch of the traffic behind you no matter what kind of vehicle you are in.
