Christmas Craft: Light Bulb Penguin Christmas Ornament
This easy to make adorable little penguin makes a great gift and also looks awesome on your own Christmas tree.
Are You bored and looking for something new and interesting to do? Do you like crafts and recycling old things into something new and different? Are you tired of buying things only to have to throw them away in a few weeks and months as they are no longer good for the purpose they are intended?
If you answered yes to one or more of these questions then I have a great craft project that you can make easily in a couple of hours time while recycling your old light bulbs and giving them a new long lasting life.
Use those old light bulbs to make a cute, adorable penguin ornament. They are cheap, easy to make, good for the environment and make great additions to your Christmas tree or you can give them as gifts.
All you need is a few simple and inexpensive items, a free afternoon and the desire to create something cute and fun!
Things you will need:
- Use light bulb (or maybe ½ dozen)
- black acrylic paint
- White acrylic paint
- large artist paint brush
- fine bristled artist paint brush
- triangle piece of felt (any color you choose)
- small matching bow (optional)
- small piece of orange craft foam to make feet and bill
- Alcohol
- 2 small squares of soft cloth
- Hot glue gun and glue
Soak one of the pieces of cloth in alcohol and wipe off the entire light bulb. This will take off any dust and make it easier for the paint to stick to the glass.
Using the large bristled artist brush coat the entire bulb with while paint except for the part that screws in. Hang the bulb up to dry. I usually use a pipe cleaner for hanging. I simply twist one end around the top of the bulb and form a hook with the other end. I then hang the bulb from my cup hook to dry.
When the paint drys, take the other piece of soft cloth and wipe over bulb. This will help remove all brush marks from the paint and make a nicer finished product.
Put on a second coat of white paint and allow to dry again.
Once dry paint the black parts of your penguin and allow that layer to dry.
Take the fine tipped paint brush and using white paint make small circles for the eyes and make an outline for the wings. Once that has dried put the pupils in your penguins eyes.
While the last stage of paint is drying cut a tiny triangle out of the craft foam to make the penguin’s beak, then draw a pair of feet out of the same colored foam.
Attach with hot glue.
Take the felt triangle and make a Santa type of hat for your penguin, this will cover the top of the bulb and give your little critter a debonair look. Use the hot glue to hold the hat together and glue to the bulb.
Place the bow at your penguin’s throat and you are done.
Isn’t he adorable!

You should look into getting some baby bottle gourds and painting them. My mother paints them to look like snowmen. I bet after I show her this article, she may do a penguin or two. U should come go through my pictures to see what she does with gourds.
