Craft Project: How to Make a Twig Planter
A twig planter can add a rustic element to your home. Here’s how to make one quickly and easily.
Bringing the beauty of nature into your home can give it a more relaxing ambiance, turning it into a natural haven where you can unwind after a busy day. One of the least expensive ways to add natural décor to your home is to make your own.
Many of the supplies for homemade, natural décor can be collected from morning nature walks if you live in a woodsy area. One group of items you’ll almost always find on a walk are twigs. Surprisingly, those twigs can be put to good use to create twig planters. A twig planter will give your home a natural, rustic look that will complement a room with a nature theme. Here’s how to make a twig planter:
Gather Your Twigs
Spend a morning gathering twigs on your morning walk or from your backyard. You’ll want to choose twigs that are fairly straight and of similar thickness. Gather a large bag so you’ll have enough for this project as well as future twig craft projects. There are so many unique ways to use twigs! While you’re outside, also gather some vines to use as a decorative element for your twig planter.
Choose the Base for Your Planter
Select a container to serve as your planter. You can use any type of metal or plastic container. Avoid using glass as it can break if handled roughly. An old coffee will work well if you have one available. The container you use should be shorter than the height of the twigs you’ve collected.
Prepare Your Twigs
Using gardening shears, cut your twigs until they’re the same height as your container or just a bit taller. Make sure you cut enough twigs to completely surround your container.
Attach the Twigs to the Container
Lay your container on its side and start gluing on the twigs using a hot glue gun. Be careful not to leave any space between the twigs so your container won’t show. You can overlap them a bit if necessary to get complete coverage of the container. Once you’ve covered your container, finish it off by wrapping some vines around the upper and lower edges to further secure the piece and add a decorative element.
Now that your twig planter is completed, you can use it to hold flowers or a plant in your living room, den, or bedroom. Twig planters also look wonderful on screened-in porches, sunrooms, patios and porches. They’re so quick and easy to make you’ll find yourself making them for every room of your house.
