Craft Projects That Can Save The Earth
What do you do to your coffee jar when it is empty? How about scraps of balsa wood or the cardboard boxes when we are done with them? Most of the time we throw them in the trash or dispose them as recycled items. The problem with recycled items is that we always think that it is thrash and therefore it will never be a valuable item in our possession-let alone be showcased in our display cabinet.

Let me introduce you to the world of miniature making. By integrating recycled items into our modelling materials, we not only save some money but also help save the environment. With a little imagination and creativity anything is possible. The “hobbit home” pictured above was built upon a foundation of recycled items that can be found in our homes (right before they get into the rubbish bin).
Let me break done what recycled items was used in building the miniature “hobbit hole”-
- Plastic Cap from a Coffee jar
- Used foam board
- Scrap pieces of balsa wood
- Used printing paper
- Cardboard box
- Bead
Always keep a look out for used items in our homes and at times things people are throwing away. I managed to salvage a large bag of used foam board a while back and that would probably last me a couple of years for my modeling projects.
The items mentioned are used to make the foundation of the miniature (which makes up 80% of the whole miniature). For fine tuning and aesthetic purposes, additional model making materials like putty, static grass, dried moss and acrylic paints were integrated into the project.
Below is the video on making the hobbit home using recycled items. For more information on painting miniatures and modelmaking, please visit 2PaintMiniatures or you can subscribe to my YouTube channel.
I hope this article somehow can change your mindset on used items, safe you some money and at the same time contribute in saving the earth all while having fun.

I am a making things out of rubbish addict, so it is good to see that someone else is too! My problem is that I find it very hard to throw anything away, because I am always thinking of what it could possibly be used for.

I am going to try this. If you have read enough of my work, you would know how much I love DIY projects. I am so in love with this idea. Thanks for making it this easy

Great article. That hobbit house is awesome, but even cooler since it’s all recycled. If people just reused more instead of throwing it away, it would save the trouble of burying a lot of trash.
