Now is a great time to begin crocheting afghans for your loved ones for next Christmas. I have already begun, and enjoy the relaxation of it.
You don’t even need to buy a pattern book at your local hobby shop. There are so many websites with free instructions, such as about.com, for not only the experienced, but the beginner as well. And there is always some brand of yarn on sale, so shop around for a good deal.

I am working on this one in veriegated yarns with a black border for my daughter this Christmas. 
Money is tight nowadays with the economic downturn. Giving a home-made gift is not only easier on the wallet, but is very much appreciated.  And if you start now, you can complete a few afghans before the holidays.
