Cross stich is a form of counted-thread embroidery to form an image out of pattern. The pattern has different signs and symbols which represents the color of thread to be used.  It only takes few minutes to learn cross stitching.

Here are the following steps:

First, be sure to have the following:

1.       The pattern/ graph

2.       Evenweave fabric

3.       Needle – the one with blunt point

4.       Floss or thread – the number of strands depends on the counts of the fabric

5.       Scissors

Next, find the center of the pattern / graph. Do it also with the fabric. Mark it if you want and to prevent confusion. You can now start stitching. For stitching, your goal is to make a X-stitch. There are two methods. The first method is to work a row of half stitches (////), then work back () to complete the X’s. Use this method for most stitching. The second method is to complete each X as you go. Use this method for vertical rows of stitches. It is important to make the X’s in same direction. Some patterns require backstitches. Backstitches are just running stitches used as an outline or to form lettering.

When you are done with it, wash it in a cool water using mild detergent. Rinse well. Do not wring, but roll in a clean towel to absorb most of the water. While still damp, place face down on a terry towel. Place another cloth on top of the needlework and press lightly with a warm iron. Let it dry. You can frame your work as desired.

My mother and I usually mark the fabric with different colors copying the one in the pattern. And for me, it is easier and also to avoid confusion. Just be sure that the marker you used is washable.
