Egg Carton Bats
How to make these fun little bats!
One of the easiest to make Halloween decorations are bats made out of egg cartons. This fun project is a must in a household with children. It does not create much mess nor is it expensive, I mean come on, the main ingredient is something that you throw into the thrash weekly if not more often.
What you will need to create your very own egg carton bats:
- A few empty egg cartons, Styrofoam or cardboard is fine, although the cardboard ones tend to look better due to the rugged texture.
- One egg carton will be enough for four bats, so keep that in mind along with how many you want to make.
- A pair of scissors.
- Black oil, tempera, water or spray paint.
- Glow in the dark paint, this can come as a pen or in a small tube either one is fine so choose what you will be more comfortable to work with.
- Some sort of a chord, the fishing line would be best due to it being clear in color, however you can get yarn or another kind of a string.
- A bag of Plastic eyes, the kind that you get in a crafts store.
- A scrap paper, or newspaper to protect the work area.
How to create your very own egg carton bats:
- Cut the bottom of the egg carton into four sections, each section should contain three egg holes. The middle hole is the head while each of the holes on the sides are the wings.
- Since a bats wings are sort of jagged looking, especially in a cartoon form you need to grab the scissors and do the same to your bat’s wings.
- Cut out a triangle out of the wings on each of the sides and also on the front, as well as cutting one out on the back.
- Now that your bat is all shaped up you need to paint him..or her. This is pretty self explanatory, depending on which medium you used so just paint the bat all black, inside and out.
- After you paint it let all of them dry good enough so that you can handle them again, if you did a few of them chances are by the time you are done painting your last one, the first one will be dry enough.
- Once dry you should glue the plastic eyes onto the head of the bat, they are either self adhesive or you can use any plain crafts glue. Use the glow in the dark paint to draw a mouth with fangs and cover the eyes so they have a fun effect in the dark.
- Now is the time for the fishing line, or your string. Poke a hole on top of the bat’s head and pull the string through it, making a knot on the inside of the head so it wouldn’t fall off. Tie up the other part or attach it directly to the ceiling.
Now that was easy wasn’t it?
