How to Make a Photo Box

How to Make a Photo Box

A photo box is a fun way to show off your photos, it is reasonably easy and inexpensive to make and it is an idea gift for any occasion.

A photo box can be made in a size to suit the photos you want to display, but the smaller the boxes the more fiddly it is to cut out the photos and the paper.  The project involves a lot of cutting out, but the end result makes it worth the effort.  You will need

  • Mid weight card in contrasting colours to make the boxes and the lid
  • Patterned paper to decorate the boxes
  • A selection of photographs, cropped and sized to fit inside the boxes
  • Several pieces of A4 photo paper and a printer to print the photos
  • A selection of embellishments
  • paper glue or glue dots
  • Stick on letters (optional)

This project involves making a series of boxes of decreasing size with a square base and oblong sides. You only need to make a lid for the largest box, be careful to make the sides of the lid deep enough to hold the sides of the box closed. I usually use craft scissors to create an attractive wavy edge to the box lid. Design your box to fit the size of the pictures you have chosen, but do not start too small as it will be very hard find photos small enough for the inner box. Cut patterned or contrasting paper to provide a backing for the  photos and when you are happy with your design stick everything in place with paper glue.  Add some embellishments to your design and then decorate the outside of the box, but take care to keep your design below the level of the lid.

Here are some photos to get you started, but you can personalise your photo box in any way you choose. Please see my article about decorating a photo box.
