Make Santa Brown Bag Ornaments

Make Santa Brown Bag Ornaments

Make good use of the paper grocery bags that fill up your drawers and cupboards – make these festive ornaments for Christmas! By adding just a few crafty accents to paper bag cutouts, you can create economical gifts for everyone on your list.

Things You Will Need

  • 1/2″ diameter wooden button
  • flesh, green, red and burnt sienna acrylic paint
  • cinnamon stick
  • green raffia
  • 19-gauge black craft wire
  • 1″ x 3/16″ wooden star
  • Tracing paper
  • brown heavyweight paper bag
  • decorative-edge craft scissors
  • transfer paper
  • stylus
  • white and black acrylic paint
  • paintbrushes
  • black fine-point felt-tip pen
  • spray acrylic sealer
  • scrap of white fabric
  • assorted scraps of fabrics
  • assorted buttons
  • polyester fiberfill
  • wire cutters
  • a hot glue gun

Method

1. Trace paper santa pattern onto tracing paper, cut out. For each ornament, draw around pattern twice on paper bag. Use craft scissors to cut out shapes.

2. Beginning 1/4″ from edge to transferred shape (front), paint coat red, face flesh, and beard and eyebrows white. Paint cheeks with red paint lightened with a small amount of white paint. Dip handle end of paintbrush in black paint for eyes and in white paint for dots on coat. Highlight eyes and cheeks with white paint. Use pen to draw “stitches” around design.

3. Spray ornament with a light coat of acrylic sealer, allow to dry. For antique effect, thin burnt sienna paint with water, apply to, ornament using light brush strokes. Use burnt sienna paint to paint wooden star.

4. For mustache, tear seven 1/4″ x 1″ strips of white fabric. Lightly brush burnt sienna paint on each strip. Glue ends of strips together below cheeks.

5. For nose, glue wooden button to face above mustache.

6. For patches, cut three 3/4″ squares from fabric scraps. Glue to front of Santa. Glue buttons near patches.

7. Leaving an opening for stuffing at top, glue front and back of ornament together. Stuff lightly with fiberfill; glue opening closed.

8. For hanger, cut a 24″ length of wire. Shape center of wire into a heart; twist wire to form a semicircle. Insert 1″ of wire ends through top of ornament; twist wire together to secure.

9. Cut several 18″ lengths of green raffia; tie into a bow around bottom of wire heart. Glue a button over knot of bow.

10. For bows on cinnamon stick, cut five 1/2″x2″ strips of fabric; tie a knot in center of each strip. Glue strips to cinnamon stick. Glue wooden star to top of cinnamon stick; glue cinnamon stick to ornament front.
