Plaited Potpourri Dough Wreath

Plaited Potpourri Dough Wreath

An indoor wreath and decoration made with some home-made dough and freshly scented potpourri to hang on your doors, knobs and walls.

To prepare the Wreath, you can use the below listed items follow some simple steps here-after:

  • Homemade Dough
  • Scented and Colored Potpourri
  • Water-based Paints
  • Clear Varnish
  • Bottle Glue or Hot Glue Gun
  • Paint Brushes

Preparing the dough

You will need the following Ingredients commonly found in the Kitchen:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 Tablespoons salt
  • 3 cups of Tap water
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (Optional)

Recipe: Mix the flour, salt and Vegetable Oil in a large bowl and knead into Cover and keep aside for a while. You can add additional flour if the moisture is too sticky.

STEP 2- MAKING THE WREATH

In the picture below, I have made a plaited wreath, you can simple roll out 3 long strands of dough and plait them together. When done plaiting, place inside a round microwavable dish, this will maintain the circled wreathe. Join the Opposite ends by slightly pressing down with some tap water.

Sticking the potpourri in the wreath

This process may require a little effort on your part, but rest assured the end result is rewarding. Stick some potpourri into the outer edges of the dough while making sure not to overload the wreath and disfigure it, since the dough will be very soft, you need to exert just enough pressure to push your potpourri into the dough.

Baking the plaited wreath

You can now manually bake you plaited wreath in a stove or the microwave oven. The Microwave works faster and you may need to bake for only 5 minutes. After baking remove from the oven and handle carefully. The dish and dough may be hot. Do not let the dough bake longer than 10 minutes since this may burn the dough and the wreath may become fragile and break when held.

Cooling the wreath and the painting job.

Once the Wreath is out of the Oven, let it cool. In the mean time, keep some water and paint brushes aside for using your water-based paints. You may want to choose a color slightly lighter than the matching potpourri. Like in the Picture below, for Dark Pink and Purple Potpourri, I’ve used light Pink paint.  Paint between the Potpourri and the front and Back of the Wreath. You can wear some protective gloves while painting but need not worry much since water-based paints come off easily from fingertips. Now let your painted wreath dry in open Air. Ideally leave it in your balcony, don’t hang put place on a newspaper and allow complete drying.

Bring the shine on

When thoroughly dried, your painted and dried Potpourri wreath may look beautiful but the last magical addition is clear Varnish. Use this where ever you have painted. You can even add a dash a varnish to your potpourri leaves and flowers. This end part really makes your wreath shine. For best results allow overnight open air-drying.

Your finished plaited wreath can be used to adorn naked, boring walls. Alternatively it can be laid flat and a matching scented candle can be placed in the center. I’m certain that I got your creative Juices flowing now, so why not give this easy craft a try and save on those expensive wreaths.
