The Joy of Sewing
Do this year’s fashions make you gag? Would you prefer a style that says “Hey, this is who I am?” It may be time to rediscover the joy of sewing.
Express Yourself
Be a trend setter, not a trend follower.
If you can sew, you are not limited to the styles and colors that are offered in stores this season. Instead, you can choose from the many fabrics and patterns that are available.
With practice, you may be able to design and draw your own patterns.
Either way, you will be able to create clothes that are uniquely you.
Save Money
If you sew, you can repair some of you most beloved but worn out clothes. That favorite shirt, skirt or even your old night gown can last years longer if you know how to repair a tear.
Also, you may find vintage clothing in an attic or thrift store that can be updated and become fun to wear.
Careful shopping can lead to “fabric finds” that can make fabulous clothes much less expensive than those you buy at your favorite boutique.
Go Green
Sewing will allow you to choose only fabrics that are natural or organic. It will be much easier to avoid synthetic fabrics that may not break down in landfills. This will contribute to saving our earth.
Also, those old clothes have to go somewhere.
Clothes that are too worn to wear, or even donate, can be cut down into fabric pieces that can be used to make new things. Good cloth from old clothes can make such things as:
-
Quilts
You can make comforters or sew a memory by using squares from your old clothes.
-
Pillows
You can make decorative pillows in all types and sizes.
-
Fashion Accessories
You can make hats, wallets and purses out of your worn jeans and shirts
-
Household Decorations
You can make pot holders, placemats and appliance covers from your recycled fabrics.
-
Recycling Crafts
The list of recycling crafts is endless. Whenever we reuse or recycle something it is good for the planet.
It’s Easy
Sewing is one of the easiest crafts to learn, especially if you can find a competent instructor.
-
Ask Around
If you have crafty friends, chances are that one of them already knows how to sew. If not, call your local craft supply store or fabric shop. Many of these stores sponsor classes in order to increase their patronage.
-
Check Online
There are many websites that offer free patterns or projects with complete instructions. Some of them actually offer video teaching.
-
Check The Bookstore
Big stores like Borders or Barnes and Noble often have large sections filled with craft books that can provide easy instructions.
Many Reasons
As you can see, there are many reasons to become reacquainted with the art of sewing. I hope you will consider the opportunity and enjoy the craft!
