Why do cops like do(ugh)nuts?

There is a reason for the stereotypical relationship between an American police officer and doughnuts. Doughnuts are often distributed a convenient stores which are normally open 24/7 (all the time) thus benefiting the American police offers who may work early or night-shifts when the majority of retailers are not open. Doughnuts contain a large amount of sugar, providing police officers with an adequate and beneficial amount of energy.

Why is the most common ring-shaped do(ugh)nut ring-shaped?

By having a small ring-shape in the middle of the doughnut it allows the doughnut to be evenly cooked and saves the dough that would have been thrown away. From whom this method originates from, is not certain.

Mythical tale: Hanson Crocket Greggory, a sea captain; was struggling to eat his doughnut at the same time as steering his ship and then slammed his doughnut on one of the wheels spokes. He then could hold the doughnut with his fingertips using the small hole in the middle whilst steering his ship. Hanson then told his chef to make the doughnuts with the hole in the middle.
