I love fruit.

It’s sweet, nutritious and overflowing with essential vitamins and minerals. And, I have a passion for learning more about the great benefits they can offer you.

Recently, I was curious about the similarities and difference between nectarines and peaches.  Check out the interesting information I discovered below:

Often referred to as “summer’s kissing cousins” on average nectarines are typically smaller than peaches. Usually nectarines are also firmer and have a sweeter flavoring. They both range in coloring from a cream yellow all the way to a blushing red.

While both peaches and nectarines mature in the middle to late summer months, the peach has a fuzzy skin, whereas the nectarine’s is smooth. Interestingly though, each has a similar scent and flavor and are often used interchangeably in different food dishes.

For many centuries, peaches and nectarines have been grown in Asia. In fact, botanists often found nectarines on peach trees as well as peaches on nectarine trees! Upon further studies, it was discovered that there was only one difference between the two types of fruit which as a single recessive gene. In other words, genetically the two fruits are identical except this one detail.

Interesting – I didn’t know that peaches could grow on nectarine trees and vise versa. I think nectarines are sweeter and last longer before going mushy.
