Philadelphia Steak Sandwich – The Unsung Fast Food?

Philadelphia Steak Sandwich – The Unsung Fast Food?

There are many, many fast foods that have jumped the pond between the USA and Great Britain. McDonald’s….Burger King….Pizza Hut….KFC….

The best fast food I’ve ever tasted though, came from a mobile fast food van in the Philadelphia docks, and I’ve always wondered why no-one over here picked them up and ran with them?

A cold night in Philadelphia back in 1990, sharing a lovely few days with one of three sisters who had emigrated to the USA.  Bored to tears with McDonald’s and Pizza Hut, her husband suggests I take a ride with him.

Partly this trip is to find something good to eat and partly to show me the street racers, young guys, pumped full of hormones, racing their dragged up road cars down near the docks to impress their girlfriends.

I never got to see the street racers, apparently we must have arrived outside of police shift hand-over, the usual hour when the racers come out and do their stuff, but what I did get to see and most definitely taste, was the best fast food I’ve ever tasted.

The hot Philadelphia Steak Sandwich, AKA the Philadelphia Hoagie, or Cheesesteak or steak and cheese, is quite simply out of this world.

Take a fresh, warm French Stick of bread and slice it down the middle.  Butter it well and fill it with, hot from the griddle, prepared in front of your very eyes, thinly sliced beef or ham, mixed with onions, mushrooms, mayonnaise and various cheeses to your preferred taste.

Oh my giddy Aunt!  Seriously, my taste buds have never been so incredibly happily assaulted by the most mouthwatering taste you can imagine.

Never mind Ronald’s limp burgers or the Colonel’s secret recipe for rarely managing to achieve the same order twice in a row, you could blow them all out of the water with a hot Philadelphia Steak Sandwich!

If I had the capital to invest, I’d do it myself.  They really would go down a storm over here in good old Blighty.

So, any entrepreneurs out there, or any gastronomic wannabes looking for ideas, look no further, and let me know when you open your first outlet !

Can\’t believe you all have not found a market for the Philly Steak sandwich. I love them with grilled onions and green bell pepper, mushrooms and provolone or swiss cheese. I’d suggest that opening a Philly-style sandwich shop should be your next business venture. :)
