Popularity of Asian Food in The Uk
A view of the UK’s love of Asian Cuisine including statistics from recent polls.
Fish and chips the national dish of Britain? Favourite take away of the Brits, right? Wrong! It seems that people are more likely to be ordering a chicken tikka massala on a Friday night. According to a recent poll conducted on users of http://uk.toluna.com/ 35% would choose an Indian, 30% a Chinese, 15% fish and chips, 10% pizza and 5% prefer kebabs. That’s a total of 85% that prefer a take away with its origins from overseas, 60% of Asian origin. (Information correct on 21st September 2009).
What can account for for this increase in popularity of Asian food? The diversity of the multicultural society in which we live could partly account for this rise as could the increase in availability of foods and spices from overseas. Mabe us Brits are just becoming that bit more adventurous with the cuisine that we are willing to try.
Although, whist we seem to show a greater willingness to dice with spice, not everybody likes it hot. In another poll on toluna, it was found that 46% preferred hot curries whilst 54% preferred a milder version.
There is also an increase in the variety and availability of ready meals in supermarkets, offering a range of Asian dishes for every tastebud. oing for a pub meal? It would be unusual not to see a curry on the menu. Even snacks such as crisps are being influenced by flavours of the East. This diversity should be welcomed with open arms and savoured.
Long live the ruby murray!
