Reward of an Apple
Apples don’t taste as good unless you retrieve them yourself.
The other day I walked outside wearing jean shorts, a t-shirt, and some pink and brown knee-hi socks. I was determined to get an apple from our apple tree.
Everyone knows all the good apples come from the top of the tree, and considering we don’t have an apple picker, I had to climb it. Now this isn’t very hard, considering I’m 14, kinda small, and I climb a lot of trees. Anyway, this tree’s branches all sort of have an upward angle, so it’s sorta hard to climb. So I started by walking around the tree, looking for a good apple. Finally I found one.
I grabbed the branch of the tree and hoisted myself up between two small branches. From there I put my foot inbetween a few branches and pulled myself up even farther, so now I was sitting up in the tree. This tree’s branches are also pretty small, so it’s unpredictable. Anyway I was finally up. I began my slow ascent up to the apple. I made it to a branch below and a little left of my apple. I straddled the branch and reached for the apple, but my arms were just too short. I couldn’t go up any higher without sliding back down, so I slowy stood up and took a step up. I was still about a foot from the apple. I took another step. So close now, I reached for the apple. I was so close; my fingertips grazed the surface of the apple. Suddenly I realized the apple was getting farther and farther away. I looked down to find my socks sliding off the branch! I took one last look at my apple and plunged to the ground. On the way down, I grabbed a branch and swung on to it. I took a second to recover my close call, then I balanced my back on a branch. I laid down on the thin branch and, praying I don’t fall, I removed my socks. When I finally had them removed, I began my second ascent up to the apple. I got near the apple again, reached for it, and finally succeeded. I climbed my way down, the apple clamped between my teeth.
On the ground, I devoured my apple. It was well worth the work.
