Strawberry: Little Red Stunners
Strawberries are singularly the most attractive fruits in the entire fruit kingdom; passion red, succulent and heart shaped. Strawberries lend photo value to any fruit basket they are placed in. It is easy to know why strawberries are so good looking when you know their lineage. They hail from the illustrious family of the rose. So when your roots stretch to the king of flowers, you are obviously going to inherit some of the looks!

Little Piece of History
Much before they were used add beauty and knock-out taste to confectionary and ice creams, strawberries were used as a medicinal herb. The strawberry was first cultivated in ancient Rome. In ancient lore, it was considered a symbol of Venus, the Goddess of love, probably because of its shape and colour. No wonder then that in France it was regarded as an aphrodisiac. Here cold strawberry soup, almost, always features on the menu for newly-weds.
The United States of America, France, Italy, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand are among the largest commercial producers of strawberries.

The Health Factor
Calorie conscious strawberry lovers really have it good! Strawberries are so low in calories that one cup of fresh strawberries contains only fifty five! Strawberries are packed with Vitamin C. however, if you chop or crush them, the vitamin is considerably reduced. Strawberries are rich in folic acid, which has been proven to reduce birth defects involving brain and nerve disorders.
But the biggest health benefit is- strawberries contain Ellagitannin, a compound known to cure cancer. In a study conducted few years back, strawberries topped the list of eight foods linked to lower rates of cancer deaths. Strawberry lovers are three times less likely to get cancer compared to those eating fewer or no strawberries.
No wonder- most of us love this pretty and healthy fruit.
